Civic issues
Topics getting the most attention in San Antonio public meetings, ranked by how frequently they come up.
Street and transportation maintenance contracts
Roughly $17 million in combined contracts would fund street pavement markings, traffic and safety operations, and multimodal transportation construction across the city.
VIA driver and passenger safety
VIA Metropolitan Transit is briefing the committee on how it protects the people who drive and ride its buses. Safety on transit affects daily commuters across the city.
Autonomous vehicle (Waymo) operations and safety in San Antonio
Waymo's driverless ride-hailing service is operating or expanding in San Antonio, and the committee is getting a first-hand briefing on how it works and how safe it is. This could shape how the city regulates or welcomes robotaxis.
Pedestrian safety and Walktober
Advocates marked National Pedestrian Safety Month with sobering numbers: 68 pedestrians killed in San Antonio last year and 49 more this year. Speakers asked the council to fund sidewalks and Vision Zero in the 2027 bond, noting only $10 million of the proposed $442 million is set aside for sidewalks.
FY 2027 Budget and 2027-2032 Bond Program Infrastructure Priorities
The council was set to receive a briefing and vote on a resolution for the next bond program — about $617 million in total investment including streets, drainage, parks, facilities and housing. Earlier discussion flagged that anything above roughly $442 million could require a property tax increase, and a proposed stormwater fee increase of roughly $0.25-0.26 per month would fund drainage projects.
Downtown mobility and parking study
The Walker Consultants study found downtown parking supply is generally adequate — about 30,000 publicly available spaces — so no new parking garage is recommended at the Alamodome Lot A. Instead, recommendations focus on wayfinding, parking discovery technology, and shifting trips to transit and ride share.
Reconnecting Communities planning grant (I-37 crossings)
A planning study is underway to reconnect the East Side with downtown across I-37, with two rounds of public engagement completed and a third planned. The vision plan with preliminary designs will be finalized in spring 2027.
Silver Line Station Area Plan & Multimodal Corridor Studies
Planners are mapping out how transit stations and major corridors like Marbach, Harry Wurzbach, and West Avenue can be made safer and more accessible for everyone.
Citywide Street Maintenance and Mastic Sealer Procurement
San Antonio is planning a $796,825 street maintenance project to apply slurry seals, striping, and pavement markings across local roadways. This work aims to extend the lifespan of neighborhood streets and improve traffic safety.
